Children & The Arts The Great Art Quest

DSC_0451Oriel Myrddin Gallery has the great opportunity to work with four schools across Carmarthenshire as part of the Great Art Quest, a UK-wide arts project designed by The Prince’s Foundation for Children & the Arts. Experienced artist Keith Bayliss and storyteller Megan Lloyd will collaborate to draw out the stories and poetry of our winter exhibition Seren Wen. Welsh stories and the unique imagery of Dylan Thomas will form the starting point for the project which introduces a range of storytelling and expressive mark making techniques to develop skills in oracy, vocabulary and visual language. The project aims to give teachers a creative ‘toolbox’ of activities and ideas for the classroom, practical creative building blocks for teachers to bring storytelling and art into their existing scheme of work and increase confidence in using arts in the classroom and in leading their class through gallery visits.

Artists As Learners

P1080005In June 2014 Oriel Myrddin partnered early career artists with experienced artist mentors as part of engage Cymru’s new professional development programme to devise and deliver exciting approaches and interventions to inspire hard to reach young people.

P1070283_2Momentum project funded by the Art Council of Wales in partnership with engage Cymru and Communities First built on on established links with Rhyd Y Gors Special School and their exceptionally supportive staff. This was an opportunity to expand on the successful Reach the Heights project by introducing young people to career options and achieving Arts Award qualifications. Lead artsit Mary Sikkel introduced the young people to the gallery, the printing practice of Artist Alan Williams and Angharad Pearce Jones’s forge and artists’s workshop.
